Don't Text and Drive
Texting while driving became illegal in the state of Michigan on July 1, 2010. The law prohibits reading, typing or sending text messages using a wireless two-way communication device in the person's hand or lap while driving a car. Drivers are still permitted to use dash-mounted navigation systems.
A police officer can pull over a driver if he sees them texting at the wheel, even if there is no other reason to flag them down. An officer can ask to see a driver's phone, but the driver is under no obligation to turn their phone over to the officer. This law will present several challenges from an enforcement perspective.
Persons found violating this law will be fined up to $100 for the first offense and up to $200 for additional offenses. The ticket will not add points and will not become part of a driver's permanent record.
